The keyword for the best vacation spot in 2020 and 2021 is safety. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, tourists want to consider options with fewer health threats. Typical tourist guides include information on accommodation, beauty, and affordability. Nowadays, safety tops the list. Thus, tourists look for the best places to go to stay safe while having fun. The European Best Destinations Organization places Portugal among the safest destinations. Thanks to its effective policies against Covid-19, Portugal remains a safe and beautiful heaven.
Selection Process of the Best Destinations for Winter 2021
Covid-19 did not only meddle with the healthcare system and the economy, it also messed up all the vacation plans, and thus the tourism sector in general. The European Best Destinations Organization (EBD) prepares yearly reports and guides for vacation. The EBD Organization is also a member of the EDEN. EDEN stands for the European Destinations of Excellence which is a project by the European Commission. The goal of EDEN is to promote tourism in Europe.
According to the new list of the EBD, summer 2020 might be a lively season after all. The EBD argues, “Many European countries are opening their borders and flights and hotels are also reopening now”. So, tourist mobility is likely to increase.
The EBD utilizes 3 criteria for selection. These criteria are:
- Less impact of Covid-19
- Efficient hygiene protocols in public spaces and availability of equipment (such as masks)
- Easy access to quality medical services
The list for summer 2020 contains 20 spots. Portugal has 4 districts in the list. All of these destinations are among the top 9. These locations are Madeira, the Azores, Algarve, and Alentejo.
Portugal’s Beaches are also Among the Safest
The EBD Organization published another list for summer 2020. This list includes the 10 safest beaches in Europe after the pandemic. Since beaches are places where social interaction peaks, the list comes in handy. Portugal’s success in the previous list continues here. The list for the safest beaches involves 3 from Portugal.
The 2nd place in the list is spared for Alentejo. Alentejo had almost none Covid-19 cases. Thus, it is considered to be a very safe place. The district has a 20 km long beach. So, it is very easy to find a secluded space for everyone.
In 4th place in the list is the Porto Santo Beach of Madeira Island. Since the island itself is secluded from the mainland, the risk of the coronavirus is less. Statistically, too, the island remains safe from the pandemic. The low population plays a part in this.
The last spot for a Portugal beach is 7th place. Meia Praia of Lagos, Algarve occupies this spot. There has been no fatality due to Covid-19 in the Lagos area.
